Nothing to do with Georges Franju’s 1960 classic Eyes Without a Face (Les Yeux Sans Visage) Ramin Niami’s Eye Without a Face is a webcam or rather a series of webcams that reclusive 20 something Henry (Dakota Shapiro) has hacked into allowing him to spy on eight women in Los Angeles.
So far so creepy, but folks who watch other folks often discover things that that really don’t want to know and Henry becomes convinced that Laura (Vladka Verevko) is not only poisoning the men that she brings home but also cooking them and feeding them to her guests at dinner parties. Then when Laura discovers she’s being spied on via her webcam things take an altogether more sinister turn as the other women within Henry’s web ring start to be murdered by a masked slasher. As if that isn’t bad enough Henry’s flat share, resting actor and You Tuber Eric (Luke Cook) starts to hang out with Laura, This is not going to end well for somebody within the triangle of this relationship.
I found Eye Without a Face to be a pretty good psychodrama. It’s well acted, Shapiro is by turns creepy and pathetic while Cook is so unbearably cocky that you just want to slap him and grind his mobile into dust. Overall the production design has a well imagined sense of sleazy agoraphobia thanks to the imaginative use of lighting and musical score. My only quibble would be that I’d already worked out who was the killer was going to be by the time I was around half way through watching the film oh and I’d really like to know more about Laura’s dinner parties.
Daily Mail Offence Scale: Swearing, drug use, sex and bloody violence so lots of things to like, so we give Eye Without a Face a 555/666.
