Late Night with the Devil (Australia, 2023)

So it’s Halloween 1977 and US TV chat show host Jack Delroy (David Dastmalchion) is locked into a ratings battle with Johnny Carson. Desperate to get those viewing figures up and win loads of lovely new advertising lolly ruthless producer Leo Fiske (Josh Quong Tart) decides that in keeping with the spooky season the program should raise some hell rather literally.

Guests booked for the show include Christou (Fayssal Bazzi), a celebrity psychic, illusionist and supernatural debunker Carmichael Haig (Ian Bliss) and former demonic possessee Lilly (Ingrid Torelli) and her psychiatrist June Ross-Mitchell (Laura Gordon). Now what could possibly go wrong when June attempts to regress Lilly to her possessed state? I’m not saying but the results are quite horrifically spectacular.

Despite its Aussie origin Late Night with the Devil does a pretty accurate job of replicating that kind of late night chat show that is so popular on US TV, albeit one that goes quite phenomenally and horrifically wrong. An added insight into the trajedy that is about to unfold onscreen is provided by the ‘found footage’ debate between Delroy and Fiske that goes on in the ad breaks that break up the live transmission. Dastmalcion is superb as the talk show host whose whole world spectacularly collapses around him and he is ably assisted in this disaster by his mustachioed worm fearing sidekick Gus (Rhys Auteri) as Lilly goes the full Regan.

Gloriously over the top TV parody we give Late Night with the Devil a 666/666. Daily Mail offence scale: swearing, smoking and bloody violence.

Late Night with the Devil is out now in UK cinemas.
